The word rapier for swords was coined around 14thcentury. This was the same period when middle class saw it’s rising and people used to keep them for self defense. Now renaissance festivals have come up with unique range of rapiers for medieval enthusiast. These swords are shorter or longer, thinner, lighter, slimmer and more decorative as compared to ordinary swords. The blade parts of rapiers are designed from stainless steel and handles are designed from steel guard, faux lather and some of them are wrapped with wire. The rapiers like 17th century Italian rapier, Pilsen rapier and Deshaux rapier have highly decorated handles along with hilt.
